Ecuador Welcome Forum: low income senior, reflections and realities:

Hi, You seem like a gentle person as I am. I spent 2 months in Ecuador this year and felt positive about my experience. I traveled south from Quito, passed through some places and took my time in Quenca, a very charming city. An ex-pat I met there showed me an empty 2 bedroom apartment in his building, all newly remodeled and beautiful. The cost was $375./ month. I next went to Vilcabamba which is much smaller and has an ideal climate. I would like to return there for a longer stay. I stayed at Charlie's Cabanas outside of town (an hour's walk on a road or a $3. taxi ride) in my own cabin with the sound of a nearby river. I meditated at the Buddhist Center in town and their accommodations are excellent. There's use of a kitchen in both of these situations. There was abundant produce available, often organic. You can look up more about Vilcabamba. What I want to emphasize is the emotional safety I intuitively felt from the beginning and it was true tot he end. I found the people kind and emotionally stable (I'm comparing to California,). My research agrees with the resident requirements of your reply. I don't know if you have social security (I do) and if it's $800./ month You can come to Ecuador for 6 months on a tourist visa if you arrange it before you come, but then you're required to leave for 3 months before reentering the country. I must add that the nature is beautiful and Ecuadorians seem very proud of it. I didn't go to the humid coast, but I ventured into the humid jungle and a rain forest (mosquitoes). The mountains are a better long term location for me. I traveled alone at the age of 69 and enjoyed myself. I wasn't lonely or afraid and met people to talk with in English and my beginner's Spanish when I wanted to. I like to be alone. Try it!
