Portugal: recommended city:

All of that sounds great.

Portugal: cost of living in Porto and Lisbon:

Hi all, What would you estimate the COL is for a single person in either city: - nice size studio or small one bedroom. need central area since I won't have a car - eat out 1/3 time. nothing fancy but like to eat food from around the world such as Chinese, Italian, Mediterranean. - not an extravagant lifestyle but not a student either. - some entertainment to meet others at events and gatherings. Thoughts?

Portugal: Becoming resident in Portugal:

Hi, I'm also from the USA. What was involved with your joining the healthcare system as residents. On one site, I read that Non-EU can join. Then I read they can't. Since you are first hand doing it I would appreciate knowing how much it costs and what the public covers. What all do you have to use the private to cover that public doesn't. Just for faster care or??? Also, what were the income requirements you had to meet. I've read multiple things about this. Thanks

Portugal: Retirement Visa:

Hi I read in an article where you quoted that it costs you 4K each time you renew the residency visa. Correct?

China: want to be interviewed for a book on living in China?:

I'm writing a book about foreigners living and working in China and was wondering if you might be interested in being interviewed. The book is focused on foreigners' perceptions of China, things they like and dislike, and how those differ from their expectations of life in China before they arrived. It is a simple process. I just send a questionnaire. You can do some rough notes. I'll follow up with a few questions to clarify some points and then, once I receive those, I'll send a polished draft. You can use your real first name or a pseudonym. I am about finished with the book but realized I need to get a wider range of experiences among the expats. If you are interested, please PM me. Thanks for reading this.

Argentina: taxes on retirement accounts:

Hi, I have read that Argentina taxes people on International income but haven't been able to find if that includes US social security and retirement accounts (IRA, etc.) Anyone know a reliable source for this information? Since Argentina doesn't have a tax treaty with the US it makes figuring it out harder.

Nicaragua: What would you do in Granada in a severe med emergency?:

Question for those of you who live in Granada. What would you do in case of a severe medical emergency? I know there is a top hospital in Managua. How do you get there? Heart attack, stroke, spinal injury? Is there a good local emergency room and ambulance with trained paramedics? Or, do you just have to cross your fingers and hope that doesn't happen? Thanks

Nicaragua: Renewing retirement visa:

From what I understand the retirement visa has to be renewed every 5 years. Is that automatic with just paying a fee or do you have to go through the approval process each time. The reason I'm wondering is that 10 years from now I don't want to be in a situation where requirements dramatically change and I no longer qualify. Thanks!

Global Expat Forum: IL not such a good idea?:

I found them helpful at first but my main problem with them is that they are selling you a dream so that they can sell you other things. Dreams are powerful because they are emotional. Balanced viewpoints are not as emotionally compelling and don't result in as much $$$.

Hungary: Retire in Hungary:

Is there a good source of information on the 5 year renewable retirement visa? I'm an American citizen so need something for non EU or EEA. I can't find it on any of the visa sites. And can it be converted to permanent eventually? Thanks
