Guatemala: Moving household from SF Bay Area to Guatemala City:

I find that most people that make a complete move to Guatemala often ship items that are absolutely not worth to ship. If you are spending that much money, on shipping every item in your house in the US to move to Guatemala, then perhaps you haven't researched the prices of most things locally. I think that you can probably manage to lighten up the load by selling things you will simply not need anymore. You can buy all the tools in Guatemala brand new, cheaper than you can buy them in the US. In fact most of the equipment we buy in the US has a much increased sticker price due to export and tax charges. You will need the cash if you are planning to stay in Guatemala for a long period of time. Since making money is the biggest obstacle. However if you already have found a good way to make a living comfortably with a relative constant income, then I would just suggest to buy the things you need once you are there. Shipping in general has the same price everywhere, I personally use the shipping yards in Miami to ship to Guatemala and the 1/4 container costs me around $10,000. USD. You can also check the prices on the Pacific Coast but I have only managed to ship from Seattle to Guatemala the safest way, and their prices are around $15,000 USD for the 1/4 container. (1/4 container = 10'w x 15'L x 8'h)

Guatemala: Buying property in Guatemala:

One thing to beware when buying property in Guatemala is the trend of false property documentation that certain individuals use to take land from other people. You have to confirm that the property title is authentic by confirming all the details through your own lawyer, and not through the one the seller provides to mask the extortion. If you find a " too good to be true" deal it is probably because it is too good to be true. You don't wan't to find later on that your land was a result of an extortion in which case your land title will be illegal. My suggestion is to become well informed with the area before deciding on the purchase of property. A good research always pays off in the end.

Guatemala: Room rental:

Most places outside Antigua are renting between Q1000.00 - Q1400.00 / Month plus a small charge for the use of the utilities, which can range between Q100.00 and Q200.00 per month. Again this is only the price for a single room in a house. To get a better idea of the current prices being charged you can also take a look in Craigslist or OLX to see what other people are asking for their rooms for rent. Good Luck.

Guatemala: Finding long term income projects:

I am a dual citizen US - Guatemalan and I am 100% Bilingual. I've spent time volunteering and working on various personal projects. However those projects ended and now I am looking for something more stable. Does anyone have any information on Permanent projects that can generate a good source of income near Antigua? Or any ideas to potentially form a new business?

Guatemala: Running in Antigua:

When I volunteered in Ciudad Vieja I often would read the postings for runners at the City Hall. They ran everyday from Ciudad Vieja to Dueñas and back. It is a nice run and you don't have to worry about the cobble stones since they run on the main road. I am sure they continue to do this even though I haven't been back in the last 2 years. You may want to check it out.

Guatemala: Purchasing Firearms in Guatemala:

My suggestion for you is to hire a security company. Usually the services of a body guard run at about $10 per day and they come with their own registered legal weapons. They can also provide you with your own weapon to use as a self defense in a business or home. They provide you with this permit to carry a fire arm as self defense while in their custody. Take a look at http://swatguatemala.com/ they are one of the best companies out there. They also provide you with the training necessary in case you haven't had safety training before.
