Ecuador Welcome Forum: Driving from Quito to Cuenca:

My wife and I have done this trip a couple times over past year. We stay at Hacienda Abraspungo on the outskirts of Riobamba, out towards Guano (a real name), which is a nice little walk-around town, like Alausi, where the Nariz del Diablo train station is.

Ecuador Welcome Forum: La Gringa: On the Radio:

That's very cool, Susan! Congratulations and best of luck to you!

Ecuador: books in Equador:

To complement GQ's points, there is another English language bookstore two blocks away from the English Bookshop called the Confederate Bookstore, with a collection slightly larger than the Bookshop. The largest collection of English language books in Ecuador is located in northern Quito. It's a lending library called, originally enough, The Library. It has more books than the other two places combined and large collections of VHS tapes and magazines as well. Still and all, I have Kindle on my iPad and S5, and I must say it's very convenient...

Ecuador: Rebuttle to Article by Huffingtonpost:

I just came across this thread with side complaint from Brandon on thwart water in Quito. I've been in Quito for 14 years, drinking the water from the tap, for the most part like GInQ. Like GQ, no ill effects from the water....

Ecuador: Hotels:

Increasing numbers of North Americans in the Benalcazar and La Carolina areas (neighborhoods around Parque La Carolina). Two nicer hotels in this area are the Sheraton (Republican de El Salvador y Naciones Unidas) and the Hotel Dann Carlton (Rep. de El Salvador y Irlanda). They've got webpages, so you can check re: location and prices to see if they fit your needs

Ecuador Welcome Forum: Internet speed - or not:

I use NetLife in Quito. I just used SpeedTest to check service to my iPad at home: 26.78mps download, 27.34 upload...

Ecuador Welcome Forum: Need cool/clean air:

Try Cotocachi, Cayambe, Pifo, or Puembo, all in the north. Cotocachi and Cayambe are near Otovalo. Puembo is between Quito and the new Quito airport, with Pifo somewhat further out. Cotocachi has gringos. Cayambe, Pifo, and Puembo do not, or if they're there, they stay out of sight.

Ecuador Welcome Forum: Moving to Quito:

Agree with GQ, there are lots of restaurants and cafes with internet throughout the city. I'm guessing here, but it's possible that there's a growing. market in the expat community for technical assistance and maintenance/repair service pertaining to computers and use of internet services (web master, that sort of stuff). I suggest a exploratory trip down here to reconnoiter Internet services, etc. and see if there's a market for your talents and experiences. Regarding neighborhoods, agree also with GQ on La Floresta. I live in a neighborhood called Benalcazar, somewhat to the north and pricier, I dare say, than La Floresta; there are quite a few re natal available at any given time in this area. Finally, regarding ccmedia's wistful comments on cheeses, I'm not a cheese detective myself, I've noticed large cheese assortments in passing by El Español over at QuiCentro and over at MegaMaxi. Your best chance for good Muenster and Swiss cheese might be at Casa de Fromage, on Andrade Marin, between Navarro y Eloy Alfaro. The owner's French, so don't know what your chances of getting American cheese are... :)

Ecuador: Another Gringo Murdered:

Gringo Tree reprinted/translated article from Cuenca's El Tiempo about the murder of an 80 year-old man in one of Cuenca's parroquias, but no mention of nationality. I Inferred from the deceased's name (Eloy) that he was Ecuadorian...

Ecuador: Cat adoption? Scams?:

Try Proteccion Animal Ecuador (PAE) in Quito; they have a webpage and a veterinary clinic. Another option is the Expats in Quito, Ecuador page on Facebook....
