Bermuda: Coming with 3 mo old baby - Need rocking chair:

I hope you enjoy your time here. have you asked the Fairmont if they can get hold of one for you? Second hand ones occasionally crop up on EMOO but you would then have to organise delivery which will be costly. New ones can be purchased at the furniture store in Hamilton along Front Street (far east end) but will not be cheap - around $800. It may be that you will have t find something different to work. Best wishes. Katie

Bermuda: Bring a Plasma TV to the island:

I would say no, don't bring it. It depends a bit on where you come from but Bermuda has US voltage and so a UK TV will not run unless you have a transformer (would have to bring that as not easily found on island) and then you have the PAL/NTCS issues - DVD players need to match TV or else the picture rolls continuously. I would suggest you come here without any technology and buy second hand (EMOO) or from a shop such as PriceRight where last seasons models are reduced in price. You will still be shocked at the price as costs are high. Now if you are from US then yes you might want to bring all your technology with you. But another warning - it may not survive the humid air and you will be surprised at what rusts or disintegrates over here. Best wishes Katie

Bermuda: Moving to bermuda:

Short answer is yes. You will need up to $2500 per month for housing if living alone, $400 for mobile, internet and TV, $500 per month for gas, electricity. which leaves you with enough for food and clothes. Plus capital outlay of $3K for moped or twice that for car.

Bermuda: What to ship or leave behind when moving to bermuda:

I arrived one year or so with nothing but clothes and a folding bike. We bought most of our furniture form one or two leaving island sales and the landlady found us some other bits and pieces including beds. Yes it is all second hand but mostly decent pieces of furniture. We will hand it on when we leave as we have a furnished home back in UK. Towels, sheets and bedding is costly so maybe if I was coming out again I would bring a spare set of each. if you have quality stuff then bring it - we can get quality stuff here but for a price. Crockery and kitchen equipment - several thrift outlets have lots on the shelves. Electrical and electronics are all very expensive - bring a computer and wiring if you can, with the necessary transformers or adapters. But electric toothbrushes won't work if you come from UK, get one here at PriceRight. if you have one bring a folding camp chair for outings, garden and picnics - they are twice the cost out here cf UK or States. clothes are limited in choice so bring plenty - but you have to have owned them for six months if you want to avoid paying duty on them - anything newer attracts 25% customs duties.
