Dominican Republic: relocating:

Yes there is a need for hairdressers. Expats (me included) are always looking for a good stylist. We dont need more wash and blow out type services, those are a dime a dozen here, and very very inexpensive. You cannot compete in that area. You will be needed for styles, good cuts, colors etc for hair that is less tolerant of chemicals! Sosua/ Cabarete area is full of expats as is the Puerto Plata area. Puerto Plata has a lot more people to draw from but is not everyone's cup of tea so to speak.

Dominican Republic: Immigration Attorney:

I can recommend Wilson Rood - goes by Billy. he is in Santo Domingo where you need to do all the filing etc. His email wilsonrood@gmail.com He speaks native English and spanish and was raised in the USA. His pricing is awesome.

Dominican Republic: Cat from US:

Check with your airline if they will crate and bring your cat on your flight. And you need to have the animal checked and certified by a vet. Check the rules out first.

Dominican Republic: Rental realistic?:

Very realistic in tourism zones.

Dominican Republic: safety and internet:

Your options are completely dependent on the area you will live in, sometimes right down to the neighborhood in the larger cities. Tell us where you plan to relocate to and maybe we can help. Safety when running - really depends on the area you live in. In some cases absolutely NOT safe because of traffic in other cases you should have no issues. Some basic rules apply - don't carry expensive phone or money, Dont run the same route. Don't leave your house empty the same time every day etc etc.

Dominican Republic: Moving:

Opening a business here is a whole other issue. What is your experience in business? Running a bar? do you speak Spanish? Any knowledge of the laws here? It is full of stumbling points if you are not careful. Do not buy any business unless you really know what you are doing. I have seen so many get taken advantage of.

Dominican Republic: Moving to DR with dogs:

I agree, you wont have much trouble finding rentals who take dogs. What area are you thinking about?

Dominican Republic: relocating to DR:

First I will say what a difference in potential locations! Santo Domingo - Piantini and Naco are very big city, lots of traffic and noise, but lots of shopping, restaurants and nightlife! Cabrera is quiet as far as I know - I've never lived there. Its a little removed as well. Luperon is very nice but like Cabrera a little isolated and quiet. Its a boaters paradise though. I have lived in Puerto Plata, Sosua Santo Doming La Romana and Costambar. Let me tell you each has its pros and cons. I have visited almost this whole country and again pros and cons. Do not let ANYONE tell you any area has no crime or power issues. THEY ALL DO but to greater or lesser extents. It also matters how you live and how you conduct yourself. In 13 years here I have only recently had any issues with crime. I chose the wrong neighborhood, was broken into and quickly rectified the situation by moving. Good idea to rent for a while and check things out!

Dominican Republic: Relocating to Sosua:

In response to your budget question - yes I think your budget is doable! It will greatly depend on the cost of school for your children. As for paying rent up front for one year - not always a good idea. Often we find ourselves in a position of withholding the rent to make sure the landlord gets things done. It is not always the case but if you pay up front then they have no reason to .... fix the roof that is leaking, replace the water pump that was old. etc etc.

Dominican Republic: Bella Vista, National District:

Bella Vista is a nice area, lots of services very close to you there. It is a reasonably safe area but not a lot of houses, a lot of high rise buildings and it is more expensive there! It is close to schools, shopping etc.
