Italy: opening a Euro account in Italy:

Beware. I have recently opened a bank account in Italy. It was easy enough, but any funds wired from the US take 30 days before they clear and you can access them. I have a major problem that I am still trying to resolve. We had to return to the US due to an illness that derailed our plans to obtain residence in Italy. I have sent two letters from to the US to the bank in Italy, asking them to cancel the account and to wire the remaining funds to my US bank. My online access was terminated and three months later I have no clue what happened to the money. Getting anyone to respond is not easy. So I am out several thousand Dollars, and I don't know when or if the situation can be resolved.

Italy: Expat Auto Insurance?:

A word of caution. My wife and I lived in Italy for two months. We were under the impression that it was OK to import our personal vehicle from the USA. When the car arrived in Livorno, I got a quote of $2,000 from Clements. The intent was to use our US plates until we received our Permesso di Soggiorno. Then the insurance was denied by AIG who is the insurance affiliated with Clements. It turn out that there is no way to get Tourist Car insurance if you are over 70. We had to return the car to the US and scuttle our plans to live in Italy. Obviously, the EU allows age discrimination.

Italy: Need advice for family relocating to Italy:

Hi! The latest I got from an Italian lawyer is $100,000 in assets for 1 year, $200,000 for 2 years and $300,00 for four years. I don't know if this is true. You get different answers from several sources.

Italy: DVD's in Italy:

Darn, I just got rid of my NTSC DVD's.

Italy: Health Insurance Policy:

We will be flying into Genova the first week of October 2014 and will apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno. I understand that the Questura requires a Health Insurance policy. Do you know of a good insurance company, and the length or period of coverage necessary before the Permesso is issued? Thanks.

Italy: Mattress Sizes in Italy:

Can someone interpret the Italian size of what we call in the US "King Size" and in Italy "Matrimoniale". I have looked at Amazon.com for reference, but what I have seen does not make sense.

Italy: Unfurnished Rentals:

We have been looking at apartment listings, and many show desirable apartments completely empty, without kitchen cabinets. To rent one of these places, I assume it would be for a long term, since you need a major outlay to set the place up. Since a kitchen is not exactly portable, what happens at the end of the lease?

Ecuador: If Not Cuenca....?:

We visited Cuenca a couple of months ago, and we liked the city. However, my wife has heart condition, and she had considerable trouble breathing. A doctor's visit back in the States advised us not to move to Cuenca due to the altitude.

Italy: Required income for retiring to Italy:

Hi! Crazy way of doing things. You would think that such income guidelines would be consistent. We are planning to retire in Liguria somewhere near Genova. The weather is supposed to be relatively cool in the summer, plus the area is gorgeous and close to France and the rest of Europe. We found a way around the income issue by hiring an Italian lawyer and applying for reacquisition of Italian citizenship. This is possible because I came to the US at age 17 as an Italian citizen.

Ecuador: Bringing a car in Ecuador:

I hear that it is almost impossible to bring a car in Ecuador. Can it be done if we use a lawyer?
