Jamaica: Scotiabank Account:

Hi. I'm also from Canada and had an account with Scotia in Kingston for when I visit. They also asked me for a refrence letter and proof of income like tax papers. Just make sure it's the branch you want to deal with as I ended up closing a few years back as it was too difficult to transfer my account to May Pen. My next trip I plan to reopen a new one again.

Jamaica: House Building:

Hi We live in Canada and are building a house just out of May Pen. And like every one says costs fluxuate and so expect to pay more than quoted. And Yes you really need to have someone like VERY close family to overlook things. We pay them to keep an eye. Otherwise if your not robbed supplies then things disapear. We also hired a night watch man who is not part of the building crew so a less likely-hood he will turn a blind eye to his builder friends stealing. Also our builder sends us whats up video posts. Which is so fabulous and a definite MUSt as we can always say show me this or that. Good luck.

Jamaica: Mosquitos:

We frequently visit JA. We have a home in May Pen and plan in a few years to move. As it is we go 1 or 2 times a year. My problem is mosquitos dem love me like KFC. No joke. Once the sun set I have to run for cover. A ten day stay gets me aprox 60-90 bites many blister over very bad and big like the size of a quarter. I try everything to keep them off. DEET deep woods off is the best but it stinks and my doctor warns its not good long term. I found tuna/aloe plant releaves the itch along with the salt water . But anything to keep them away?

Jamaica: Banking:

Hi everyone Another trip to JA coming up in a couple weeks and we thought it may be good to establish a credit/banking history for when we do make our move. So we want to open a bank account. Can a foreigner open an account??? Besides ID do I need any thing else? Our Income tax papers or references of any sort? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Jamaica: Health Insurance:

Can anyone recommend a good health insurance company thats not going to cost an arm and leg for 3-6 month visit.? I'm

Jamaica: Lots of queations on moving:

Hi, my partner of 20 yrs and I would love to move to May Pen where he has family; probably within 3-6 yrs. Living arrangements are of no issue for us. We would like to get into farming, livestock or some other business (have a few ideas). We would like info on the moving aspect. Shipping our belonging ie. take furniture in a container or leave it behind and ship only barrels of personal effects? What's required legally to move, ie do we have to apply? He would be a returning resident but I'm Canadian we are not married. Does this poise a problem? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Jamaica: cost of living in Jamaica:

Wow Are you living in a palace? Your paying way to much!!! Your landlord must be a Very Happy man! You should take a look around, compare prices. We rent out our home $400 mth in May Pen ( quiet street fenced 3 bedroom 1/2 acre) hydro is aprox $40 mth ( canadian) now I could get $650 but life is hard for alot of people so we price down. Friend in Ochi pays $1000 gated community.
