Mexico: U.S. brokerages and mail forwarding services:
I am researching a potential move and knew of the difficulties with financial institutions when moving abroad. I have no intention of trying to fool the companies that hold my dough. I sent emails to both of the companies I use saying I planned to reside outside the US for a few years and how would that affect my accounts. One, Vanguard said no problems. The other said "big problems" so I know if I go through with this I will need to change one company. As has been mentioned, Schwab has accounts set up for this and experience dealing with expats. I have been with the company I might need to leave for over 20 years and have a high six figure balance with them.
Ecuador Welcome Forum: PROGRESSIVE CHURCH IN CUENCA?:
Don't feel bad. Your ilk pop up all the time and run off crying pretty quickly.
Ecuador Welcome Forum: Moving to Quito:
I also agree with GQ's assessment of good and bad areas. Quito (to me) can only be described as glorious. Have a great time!
Ecuador: jobs:
Good luck Doug. Manta isn't my cup of tea (I prefer Quito). But you are right at 25 years of age you can't go wrong. Enjoy your adventure!
Ecuador Welcome Forum: Cuenca Expat killed:
"When the attacker discovered that the victim wasn't going to pay him for his 'services', a fight ensued, ending in the death of the gringo"
Whose word do we have for this? The attacker? It is just as likely the "attacker" was not gay, never intended to have sex and agreed to go home with the gringo to rob him. As a gay man I will be watching this with interest but I am not willing to accept the attacker version unless there is some other corroboration.
These types of stories involving older gay men coming to a bad end in a third world country under these type circumstances isn't unheard of. I know of several similar stories out of Mexico and Peru. Gay men should use more caution in developing countries and use hotels for these sort of meet ups instead of bringing strangers home.
Ecuador: Think your country is safe?:
Interesting list. Surprised to see Dominican Republic near the top and Haiti near the bottom. I wonder what explains that since they are both in the same island?
