Colombia: Laguna de Guatape:
It is possible by using Rionegro (1 hour instead of 2 hours away) instead of Medellin for services and purchases, although I have heard that the Aveneda Americas hospital in Medellin is the place to go for the BEST medical care. I have lived in Guatape for 2 years and travel to Medellin as rarely as possible.
Colombia: Looking for safe, pretty towns near Medellin:
Check out Guatape--huge lake, very safe, pretty resort town, 2 hours outside Medellin, one hour from international Medellin airport in RioNegro. I have been living here for 2 years.
Colombia: pets?:
I moved to Guatape outside of Medellin with my 2 cats. Admittance thru Medellin airport was super easy, but be sure you gat to your departure airport very early as the airline agent will take some time to look up and review all entrance regs on your pet and then will have to verify that you have all the correct forms and documention on it. I flew American out of Miami and it took close to an hour.
At least in Antioquia I have been told that it is illegal for a landlord to restrict pets. Since arriving I have rented 2 apartments and looked at about 6 others and none of them had pet restrictions.
Here in the resort town of Guatape, leashes are optional and most people/dogs don't use them. Have never heard of a dog attack here and have not seen any dog fights.
I did have trouble upon arrival, finding a hotel that would allow pets!
Colombia: Retire in Colombia:
You are so wrong! I moved to Guatape Colombia last April, love it and feel completely safe. No Farc conflicts in this area any more.
And of course Colombia has pensionado/retirement visas, current income requirement from a government pension is 3 times the Colombian minimum wage. You should check but I think it's around $700 US.
