Re: living in Nha Trang Do you have specific questions or just want a take on living here? A good through the forums search on Nha Trang will help, too. I have lived here in Nha Trang 6 years, but had previously stayed in 3 month bits over 13 years. You will find Nga Trang developing very quickly, I think not always for the best, as it has become far too congested for my preference. But it is still reasonably priced, has good seafood and has improving medical care. The younger expat folk here are generally long-term, educated and enjoy a varied social life. Or so I observe and so they tell me. The older set are couples, singles are both men and women, and usually well-traveled, educated and interesting. There has been an almost explosive growth in Chinese visitors very recently. Prior to that flood, there had been a dramatic influx of Russian visitors, but that seems to have slowed a bit, though younger East European visitors often come here to work. I find these young people alive, bright and charming. It is easy to get around here by bus, bike or moto. There is a significant criminal element here, with a serious hard drug problem in some neighborhoods which one becomes more aware of as a resident. The typical issues of many tourist areas...purse snatching and late night robberies are a common conversation topic Restaurants are many and varied, with a broad choice of cuisines. Any if this help? Anyone here on the forum can advise you of a preferred restaurant , bar, music scene, gym, and so on. The more specific your query, the better. Rick

Vietnam: adoption:

We have adopted 4 children...3 from Vietnam and 1 from India my concerns are several. First, if you might one day return home, you need to know that your paperwork will be accepted there. Secondly, you need to have assurances that the child is registered and that you can be absolutely certain that an " adoption" is the real deal. Count on it...fraud in real estate, banking, anything with lawyers, is rampant. I strongly suggest you contact an agency like Holt in the United states to see who they have a trust relationship with and who have a long history placing children out of Vietnam. I mention them because we got our first adopted child here...one, if not the first child they placed from here. At one point all foreign adoptions were stopped by Vietnam, but Holt restarted in 2014. Have them or one of the Australian charities operating orphanages for a long time give you a referral to an attorney. We learned of a newborn in Nha Trang ( THE grandparents knew of us and asked us to take the boy. I mentioned the call to a maid whose brother and his wife, we're unable to conceive. Within 24 hours that boy was theirs and we attended husband first birthday party. Understand...this is a country of whimsy within application of the law. And if you are a foreigner, the rules can quickly change. Check with your embassy for a referral or with a long term agency. Trust nobody else. Good luck Rick

Vietnam: Buying a good helmet in Nha Trang:

Looking for a high quality motorcycle helmet in Nha Trang.

Vietnam: Feather art:

I have purchased cards and pictures done with tapered or rolled colored paper. It is an art learned from the French which results in a kind of base relief. Currently I can find some of this work in Saigon, some of which is in the form of earrings and the animals. I am looking for the cards and would like a wholesale connection closer to me here in Nha Trang than is Hanoi. Maybe I am being too vague, but maybe you follow. Any leads? Thanks.

Vietnam: Need advice from TEFL teachers:

Is there any question? It amazes me that there are people who still even approach such nonsense. Think of how you pay for things...do you get the vendor's acct. And passport information? You can be paid via PayPal, SMS and other secure methods. My cousin has worked from Croatia translating for clients from India to Brazil and only accepts PayPal And why do you need a company to go through when working online? If you are really qualified to teach, why dont you know these things? Just because you are a native English speaker does not mean you are qualified....the first thing schools here in Vietnam ask for us a resume'... and all of the reputable schools require certification by the government.

Vietnam: Health:

Beware Dengue. I am in Nha Trang and have twice contacted Dengue...a few montgs apart. Nonfun at all! The mosquito responsible is the same as that which carries Zita, can survive in even the minimum moisure of plants, is acive both day and night. It is a short taveler, so reinfects in concentrated areas. In my case, i got 2 different strains ( there are 4), one being hemmoragic....guaranteed death. Please wear repellant. The fever is quite widespread now.
