Hi everybody,

I have been offered a job by one of the reputable company in jeddah and I have accepted the offer. I would highly appreciate if someone could answer my following quries.

1. How long it takes to get the visa approved from the Ministry once it has been applied by the sponsor?

2. Is it possible to get SUV for SR 3000 per month?

3. Can I get a good 3 bedroom fully furnished apartment near airport area for SR 8000 per month?

4. Is there any Canadian school in jeddah? How much fees is for an American School in jeddah for two kids (grade 8 and grade 6)?

I look forward to hearing from you guys soon as I am planning a move to jeddah in May 2010.

visa- depends on company and wasta they have and your nationality and job. The process seems to take about three months for ours- that is for a proper work visa- you need medical, etc

To buy one is about 20,000 SAR for an old one and 40,000 wiould get you a really good one second hand. I do not think they do monthly payments for new folks- but our company offers and interset free loan to buy one. You can rent easily- but not sure how much.

Appartment- no. You need an accomodation allowance of about 140,000 SAR. If they have not offered this then I would not come. You will need to live on a compound- especailly if you bring your family. They have all just gone up in price. THree bed I think start at about 140,000 in western family compounds.

If you are Muslim and your wife does not mind covereing and you feel you could live out- then you would get an good place in a poor district for about 60,000 for a 3 bed villa- but it will not be easy to get one. It is alot easier for the kids ( and in fact the only way I would consider) to live on a compound.

There is only the American school- but many Canadians choose the other schools as ther are very few western kids at the Amercian school and it has a poor reputataion. So British International school, or jeddah Prep. I think fees are about 50, 000 SAR- but contact the schols and ask. the american school is the cheapest. Again- normal packages offer school fees ( unkless your is a wopping wage). Also if French speaking Canadaian - as amny are here there is the French school.

Be careful- I would want 3 bed acconodation in western compound ( sierra, Bastaeen, Continenatl village, Shabbatly) read info on site on compounds. Also not an allowance - but they pay. The compounds have all just put there prices up 10,000 a year. I know two families who have been priced out of both schools and houses and are leaving.

Also school fees paid should be part of the [package- then if there is a 10% rise or something you are cocvered. Once you are here- your negotiating position is weak- quite simply most companies do not care- so if you try to even give ultimatum ( as one family has- where he has worked for years here) they will just say leave. Many of The airport staff live on Continenetal village- next to jeaddh prep. I think the 3 beds are about 120K now.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your reply, really appreciate it. I am getting SR 96,000 as housing allowance, SR 40,000 education allowance and SR 4000 as transportation allowance. I was wondering if it is enough to live comfortably in jeddah. It's excluding the basic salary.

I don't mind to live in a decent 3 bedroom villa, but in a good locality.

I heard that vehicles are available on lease and rent as well. Is it enough for a good SUV?

I am really confused now whether all these benefits will be enough or not as I have already accepted the offer.

Hi
There is a canadian school, it is called Advanced Generations School, www.ags.edu.sa, and it is in connection with the BC gov't and uses BC curriculum. Right now it is only grades k-3.
