What activities, clubs and organizations would you recommend to newcomers to help them meet others?
Every friday, the ex-pat community meets up for informal drinks, quiz nites, etc... at the "International Club" in the Carthage Golf Club; Hash Harriers, a running club, meet up every Saturday afternoon for fun runs/walks. Very family oriented.
In general, what are peoples' priorities in this city? For example, do lives revolve around work, family, socializing, sports, etc.?
Social life is very good. A good mix of British, American, French, German ex-pats. Many parties, social events organised. Several golf clubs situated nearby. Beach life and sailing good.
In terms of religious, racial, economic and cultural diversity, are the people of this city or town diverse? Are they accepting of differences? Describe.
Tunisia is a Muslim country, but very tolerant of non-Muslim culture and customs; there are churches here. No dress restrictions; Crime low. Expats tend to be on packages that put them apart from the average Tunisian economically.
What are the main industries in this city? What types of career opportunities commonly exist? How do most people find new job
Oil business, nearly all the major oil companies are located here. Drilling and exploration; Diplomatic community is also large.
If a friend of yours was thinking of moving to this city or town from far away, what other advice would you give them.
Get to know the anglo-saxon community; Live in northern suburbs of La Marsa or Gammarth or Carthage. Don't be fooled into thinking life is very cheap here!!! Imported goods are heavily taxed and hard to find!! Local produce /vegs/fruit/fish very cheap.
