United States Department of State - Family Liaison Office's Contingency Plan: Don't Leave Home Without It provides in-depth information about preparing for emergencies and evacuations. Although the document is prepared for government employees, much of the advice is relevant to any expat.
In this document, the State Department explains, "No matter how calm things are at your post, you should not be lulled into thinking that it can't happen here as 65% of all evacuations occur in low to medium threat posts." That's very important to keep in mind. You may be heading to a high threat location and you and your employer will be taking security and emergency planning very seriously. But, if you're heading to a low or medium threat location, please don't ignore this important part of your preparation. Natural disasters, terrorist activities and other unexpected emergencies can happen anywhere. Preparation can be life saving."
