Frank Gillingham, M.D. with HTH Worldwide wrote and article entitled, Medical Preparation When Living Overseas, which provides a detailed checklist to cover before moving abroad. Here are just a few highlights. Click here to read it in full.
- Learn about the specific health risks of your destination and obtain vaccinations from a qualified physician
- Visit your primary care physician and dentist and obtain all medical histories/records
- Select an English-speaking, qualified physician in your destination and arrange an introductory appointment
- Translate the names of prescription medications you use
- Pack medications, a first aid kit and a reference book about common medical conditions and their treatment
- Understand the healthcare system in the destination country
- Master the local medical lingo
- Develop a contingency plan for serious illness
- Prepare for the psychological aspects of life abroad, including culture adjustment and culture shock
- Recognize that despite significant variations in the delivery of healthcare services, the U.S. way is not the only effective way
- Evaluate your health insurance benefits.

Moving abroad while pregnant may seem like a risky or stressful decision. With careful planning and preparation, it can be a great experience that quickly immerses you and your family in the local culture! Talking with other expats about local hospitals, doctors and local standards of care can be extremely helpful. Use our Country Discussion Forums to connect with others. ExpatExchange has also been running a questionnaire about Having a Baby Abroad for several years. It offers advice from expat parents about prenatal care, giving birth and medical facilities abroad. Doing lots of research can make a big difference! Know ahead of time whether you need to make special requests to have an epidural (should you want that option), to nurse your baby while at the hospital or to room with your baby.
It is common for expats living in areas where medical facilities and care are inadequate to
return home or travel to a nearby country to deliver their babies. This is an important consideration when choosing health insurance and requesting special benefits from your employer.
