Starting Your Job Search

Many of our members are not being transferred abroad by their current employers, but searching for a position abroad. Obtaining a work permit is often a big hurdle and we'll cover this in an upcoming issue.

Kelly Magowan of Six Figures, Australia's first job site exclusively for high salary earners, wrote a great article, entitled Start with You - Not the Job Title.

In her article, Kelly advises, "In my experience with job seekers or careers clients, most people approach the job search by looking at the job titles and try to fit themselves into these boxes. Once you have a few years of experience behind you and have developed a vast array of skills and experiences, trying to fit into a box often causes frustration. The best way to begin your job search is to start with you, your skills, interests, values, abilities and motivators. Rather than trying to fit yourself into a position description, create a position description of the types of jobs you are interested in and that suit you. It is a far more empowering process and is more likely to focus your job seeking and bring about a satisfying result."

Thanks to the Internet, searching for a job abroad is much easier than it used to be. There are hundreds of international jobs sites and even video interviewing. Be sure to frequently check our Overseas Jobs section and Subscribe to our bi-weekly classified newsletter, ExpatExchange Job & Classified News, which delivers new job opportunities right to your e-mail inbox.

Finding a Teaching Job Abroad

There are many resources online to help people searching for an international teaching position. Once you've narrowed down the options, it's important to figure out whether the schools in question are the right fit for you. Kelly Blackwell, author of The Complete Guide to Securing a Job at an International School offers some great advice to teachers seeking overseas employment in her article, entitled, 3 Key Steps To Choosing The Right Teaching Job Abroad. Below is a synopsis:

1. Does the school have a director from a "western" country? Or a director with experience in "western" educational practices?

2. Rather than talk to the recruiter about your teaching philosophy, ask them about the teaching and learning philosophy and practice of the school.

3. Check the school's reputation using online resources and by talking to teachers.
