On July 3 the American Embassy in Kathmandu issued a message with the following information:

The Embassy has received credible information that Maoist activists have targeted casinos in Nepal for attack within the next few days. While casino operators are aware of this threat and are said to be taking countermeasures, the Embassy is unable to evaluate how effective those measures might be. The Embassy advises American citizens in Nepal to exercise caution and avoid visiting casinos for the next seven days until the Embassy can better judge the extent and scope of the threat.

For further information on travel to Nepal, please consult the Department of State's latest Consular Information Sheet for Nepal.

This Public Announcement expires August 3, 2001.
