September 7, 2001 The Department urges Americans to avoid all travel to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla Park, and their environs in southwestern Uganda, until violence in the area subsides or regional governments take appropriate measures to ensure security in the parks.

There were two attacks on the village of Nyakacence just outside the gate to Mgahinga Park on the night of May 29-30. The perpetrators are suspected to be rebel fighters from Rwanda or the Democratic Republic of Congo. Although there were no deaths in these attacks, rebel activity in neighboring Rwanda, particularly in Virunga National Park (Parc des Volcans) which borders Mgahinga Park in Uganda, has the potential to spill over into Uganda in the future.

This Public Announcement extends the June 1, 2001 Uganda Public Announcement and expires on December 6, 2001.
