Parent's Review of International School Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

International School Hamburg

In what town or city is this school located?

Hamburg

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Pre K through 12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus, train, walk, bike, parents automobiles.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Facilities are adequate to support the regular curriculum. The extra-curricular activities are limited to sports related activities or what parents can set up. The school lacks an orchestra and/or band that should be available to a school of this size with as international a population as ISH has.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Very little was done to help in the transistion from our home country to ISH. Luckily our children were comfortable and confident prior to the move.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

PTA, German language classes at personal cost, very little other organized activities for parents. It is very easy for incoing parents to get lost, especially if it is their first transition overseas/out of home country. The one good highlight in this area is the International Fair that exposes families to other cultures.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Currently the success of your children is to the quality of the assigned teacher to that classroom. Some are outstanding where others are inadequately prepared to effectivly teach the assigned grade level. The junior school admistration is not effectively utilizing its available resources, so issues have been ignored and hurt moral and learning. The upper school is more effective in meeting your childs needs. The IB program appears to be challenging in preparing grades 11-12 for university. The children not enrolled in the IB prgram suffer. Overall the school needs to change its direction, adminstratively to meet the needs of the children enrolled. The teachers and staff need to remember that they work for the children enrolled and the parents that are paying the tuition.
