This Public Announcement is being issued to alert U.S. citizens to the fluid security situation in Mauritania following an attack against the government on June 8, 2003. This Public Announcement expires on September 9, 2003.
The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the fluid and uncertain security situation in Mauritania following an attack against the government on June 8, 2003. Fighting has occurred between unidentified factions within the military and government forces. While government forces have regained control of much of the capital, Nouackchott, the security situation remains uncertain.
U.S. citizens are urged to carefully review travel plans to Mauritania. Although Westerners are not being targeted, American citizens already in Mauritania should stay close to home, monitor media updates, review their personal security situations and take those actions they deem appropriate to ensure their well-being.
Americans in Mauritania are strongly urged to register and to obtain updated information on travel and security in Mauritania at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy at Rue Abdallaye, Nouakchott, telephone (222) 525-2660 (ext.4740), 525-2663, 525-1141/45 or 525-3038, fax 525-1592, after-hours telephone 525-3288. The U.S. Embassy in Mauritania may periodically suspend service to the public to review its security situation. American citizens who require emergency assistance should contact the Embassy by telephone.
