Sri Lanka Travel Warning
Issued by U.S. State Department
Jul 13, 2001
On July 10 the President of Sri Lanka suspended Parliament. In protest of the suspension, an opposition party plans to mount a campaign of peaceful civil unrest beginning mid-July. It appears that Sri Lanka may be entering a period of increased civil unrest and mass political demonstrations. While these demonstrations are not expected to target Americans, American citizens should exercise caution when traveling in Sri Lanka during this period, including avoiding large gatherings.
