Jordan Travel Warning
Issued by US Department of State
Dec 23, 2002
This Travel Warning is being issued to alert Americans to continuing security concerns in Jordan. Although the US Embassy in Amman has lifted its authorization of voluntary departure for dependents and non-emergency personnel, the Department continues to urge U.S. citizens to carefully consider the risks of travel to Jordan. This Travel Warning replaces the Travel Warning of November 22, 2002.
On October 28, 2002, an American employee of the US Embassy in Amman was assassinated. Two perpetrators have been apprehended, but others may still remain at large. Earlier Warden Messages have noted the threat of kidnapping of U.S. citizens.
All U.S. citizens in Jordan are urged to consider their personal security and to take those measures they deem appropriate to ensure their well-being, including consideration of departure from the country. Americans who remain in Jordan or those who visit despite this Warning should exercise maximum caution and take prudent measures to maintain their security. These measures include maintaining a strong security posture by being aware of their surroundings, avoiding crowds and demonstrations, keeping a low profile, varying times and routes for all required travel and notifying the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate in case of any change in the local security situation. U.S. Consular personnel remain available to provide emergency services to American citizens. The U.S. Embassy can be reached at 592-0101 extensions 2504/2063/2062.
