An Expat Talks about Living in St Johns, Antigua & Barbuda

Submitted by Caribbeannatural

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

St Johns

How long have you lived there?

3 yrs.

What activities, clubs and organizations would you recommend to newcomers to help them meet others?

Being friendly, first and foremost, interaction with the locals, being creative and resourceful. Getting out - whenever you're invited out, accept it. The beach is good, live music events, lots are free events. Come outside yourself, create programs for the youth, don't be afraid to ask for sponsorship.

In terms of religious, racial, economic and cultural diversity, are the people of this city or town diverse? Are they accepting of differences? Describe.

One Love...the only description!!!

What are the main industries in this city? What types of career opportunities commonly exist? How do most people find new jobs?

I became a School Teacher after being on Island for 7 months. Island needs Teachers and medical professionals badly!!! Apply yourself just like anywhere else.

In general, what are peoples' priorities in this city? For example, do lives revolve around work, family, socializing, sports, etc.?

Everybody is trying to make a living. Grow food if you can, or at least know someone who does! Work is vitally important, even a day work is important, unlike America. A day work is also respected! You have to get with Cricket and u have to get with Futbol (soccer). If you don't get to know the people in your village, you are doing yourself a disservice.

If a friend of yours was thinking of moving to this city or town from far away, what other advice would you give them.

Be careful, very careful about building on someone else's land...not good!!!
