An Expat Talks about Living in Salinas, Ecuador

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Salinas

How long have you lived there?

1 year

What activities, clubs and organizations would you recommend to newcomers to help them meet others?

We don't seem to have anything like this in Salinas but personally would like to start a sport fishing club as there are so many different types of fishing down here and no one really has tried to make this available to Ex-pats throughout all of Ecuador. So if any one is interested in sport fishing in Ecuador please make contact so as trying to get as many people with a similar interest together and see if we can go out and have some fun and get out. Pus get out and see what this country has to offer for all us outdoor types.

In terms of religious, racial, economic and cultural diversity, are the people of this city or town diverse? Are they accepting of differences? Describe.

Think you will see people from all across the globe, but having lived in Montinita for four months, where you had all sorts of young people, backpackers and surfers filter through on a daily basis. That you will not see here. Pretty quiet during the week but the weekends can be a little crazy. So we live at the other end of town where it is quite peaceful and hardly much activity, even during the weekends. We like it. As far as the locals they seem to accept us here and some are very friendly and nice. Just like the states you"ll find all kinds down here.

What are the main industries in this city? What types of career opportunities commonly exist? How do most people find new jobs?

Not many jobs down here as this is a tourist town. Now once the international airport does open, and know one seems to know when that is or will be. Think things will begin to open up then. Tourism and fishing is what they have here in Salinas. Not many job openings down here plus no one wants to pay anyone anything. Hopefully that will change in time.

In general, what are peoples' priorities in this city? For example, do lives revolve around work, family, socializing, sports, etc.?

My view is the Malecon in Salinas is where most people hang out at the restaurants and bars down there. That is not my thing. Maybe go down once a week for a meal or go down and listen to some live music, which they have down here on occasions. But it gets a little crazy for my taste on the weekends, particularly in the high season.

If a friend of yours was thinking of moving to this city or town from far away, what other advice would you give them.

I'd say if you are retired and wanting a nice beach area where the views are exceptional. Yes this maybe the place for you. But there are many cities along the coast that you may like better. One plus for us is we live very close to the main mall here, walking distance and we really like that as in the past it would take us all day of shopping when we lived in Montanita. P.S. Just lessons learned would only bring down only what you absolutely need. Shipping items to here is very expensive and a real pain in the butt. Would not recommend that unless you absolutely need to.
