Parent's Review of American Academy for Girls in Salwa, Kuwait

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

American Academy for Girls

In what town or city is this school located?

Salwa

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

It claims to have an American curriculum, but a lot of the school is operating without any curriculum.

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Most are driven, there are also bus services.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The school is extremely run down and extremely crowded. The owners refuse to move to a new school, even though they have the funds to do so.

The school has an outdoor gym, which is completely inappropriate for Kuwait because it is often dusty or too hot to be outside. Several gym classes also have to share the one court, which is the size of one basketball court.

The school has basketball, volleyball, soccer, track and field, and badminton. Unfortunately, the three or four teachers who managed the entire sports program have now either left or been fired.

There are also activities available such as academic games and drama clubs. While teachers do their best to host these activities, they are often unpaid and unthanked for the extra work that they volunteer to do.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Nothing. Most students will stay local after graduating, if they go on to university at all.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The school is trying to begin a parent teacher organization. Though, I believe, like most things at AAG, it will be abandoned.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

I would try to avoid AAG. The current superintendent believes the school is a business and that the 'customer is always right'. In this case, the customer is the student and the parent.

Thus, the academic integrity of the school has been completely shattered as parents just need to complain to get their grades changed.

Students who complain also have any discipline consequences removed and thus have no consequences. Obviously, this has led to several severe discipline problems, especially in the high school (which set fires in the school this year).
