How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Children that live in the center of Moscow come to school mostly through private drivers, some of the older children use the Metro or shuttle buses. Students that live in a gated community often use a private bus service or walk.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The facilities are what make this school attractive. There are two theaters; one of which can seat 600 people and is professionally equipped with sound systems, lighting and other professional equipment. There are two pools up to 3 m deep and 25 m in length. Four gyms that can be combined into two huge ones for international competitions. A weight room. Skating rings in the winter. Two outside soccer fields. Two skating rings in the winter. One summer tennis court. There are amazing art facilities that serve a band, singing and visual arts. The school puts a heavy emphasis on extra curricular activities.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

In the elementary school a student is given a buddy when first arriving to school- if available from their native home. There are no issues fitting in since there is a 25% turnover rate every year and peers understand the pressures of moving.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Parents are kept well busy if they chose to be. There are two class parents in elementary classes and several grade level leaders in the middle and high school. Charities are constantly running with galas, quiz nights and other social events. Almost all holidays are recognised and celebrated. There are programs such as the mother language courses that parents can help put in.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

The facilities and feel of community are what make this school special, however academics seriously lack. The school attempts to incorporate too many things into the curriculum causing students only to get the general idea of all things. Although this is an American school there is no SAT prep class. The school forces children in the high school to go through IB courses but neglects to focus on it enough to have neccesary EE classes.

My recommendation is to attend the school, take advantage of the facilities and sense of community but if you can afford it teach your child at home through tutors in order to prepare him/her for college.

There is also a very long wait list for this school. If you are interested in the school and your company or embassy does not provide a pre-paid seat, you do not hold an American, Canadian or UK passport expect 1-2 years of waiting. During this time most children attend the British School- a profit oriented and not to be recomended school.

AAS is a good school but one has to consider some major flaws.
