Parent's Review of Seoul Foreign School in Seoul, Korea

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Seoul Foreign School

In what town or city is this school located?

Seoul

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

American

What grade levels are represented at this school?

JK-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus, private drivers, parent drivers, walk

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Facilities are acceptable. High school and middle school are older buildings. Nice sports facilities. Nice campus.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Only superficial transition programs available to students either arriving or departing. School spends a lot of time and money helping teachers transition but, oddly, not students.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

PTA is available but most parents meet and socialize at groups (i.e. The Seoul Club) outside of school.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

My eldest daughter attended the SFS middle school, which is widely viewed as the weakest unit of SFS. My family found the social environment toxic. Our daughter was bullied by both teachers and students. The principal and counselor made only passing efforts to resolve problems. The school has an anti-bullying program, but the adults do not want to get involved. I had thought the targets were incoming white children in a majority Korean school but I later learned that some of the worst behaviors were directed at ethnic Korean girls. In the end, I determined that the principal was responsible for the atmosphere at the middle school. If she would not have tolerated bullying by teachers, then the teachers would not have tolerated bullying by students. Of course, the school's view was that students and parents were to blame. Finally, the teachers are mediocre at best, I guess because they are hired from Bible Belt colleges.
