Submitted by TaraSimone

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

The International School of Iceland

In what town or city is this school located?

Garðabær

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Kindergarten -Year 8

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Private transport or walk.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The school is housed in a new building with the very best of facililties including an indoor pool and woodwork room. It is a shared facility with a public Icelandic school which allows for excellent cultural integration opportunities. There are plenty of academic and sport based after school activities and there are also extra-curricula social events and occasions organised for both parents and students.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

I am the parent of a special needs child who requires an indivdualized program and a teacher assistant. I have been impressed with the approachable manner of the staff and their willingness to think 'outside the box' in order to cater appropriately for my son's special needs. I am also a teacher and cannot speak highly enough of the care my son has received from this school community.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There is a parent teacher organisation at the school that actively works to support the ethos and philosophy of the school. Together parents and teachers promote education and community through activities and fundraising. There have been outings organised throughout the year for parents to socialise over dinner or drinks and many parents have become good friends which only serves to strengthen the school community.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

I would hiighly recommend this school to families moving to Iceland. The staff are fabulous people that have the best interests of the children at heart. It is a small school and as such chiidren are given a greater degree of individualized attention. I have had a wonderful ecperience having both my children attend for a combined three years.
