An Expat Talks about Moving to Cuenca, Ecuador

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Cuenca

What advice would you give someone preparing to move to your area about the actual move, choosing a neighborhood and finding a home?

Do your research as there is a lot to know and understand I would strongly recommend you rent from people whom own the property. There are shysters that simply sub-let and you will have no protection of insurance and loss from people whom come and go there. Beware is the operative word here.

What type of housing do you live in? Is this typical for most expats in your area?

We are in a large home which has separate baths for each bedroom and full use of the house/kitchen. It a beautiful home and the owner lives here as well. You will want to watch how far the bus stops are and markets. The quality is average however has a nice yard also.

How did you choose your neighborhood and find your home or apartment?

We found a B&B first however the price went up to $550 mo instead of the 300 which was advertised. They said the 300 ones were taken,(not true they didn't exist. We were lucky enough to meet others on the street that told us of better places for $210 mo. We moved. Ask around especially the cab drivers, they know a lot.

Are your housing costs higher or lower than they were in your home country? What is the average cost of housing there?

The housing costs here are substantially less than anywhere in the US. Our costs in the US for similar housing would be at least $1500mo
