Expat Advice: Working in San Vito, Costa Rica

Submitted by Tenera

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

San Vito

What are the main industries in this city? What types of career opportunities commonly exist? How do most people find new jobs?

No industry. San Vito is a small town alas the capital of a region named Coto Brus. The town has a few supermarkets, bookstores, many clothes and shoe shops, a couple of bakeries, a post office, a municipality building, a computer service, three restaurants and a few shops and vets that cater to farmers. No real social life.

What type of work do you do and how did you find your job?

I am an Interior Designer but now work as a translator. I have clients around the world and work from home - wherever that may be. I use internet to market my services.

How did you obtain your work permit? What advice would you have for others about work permits?

No work permit required to be a translator working with ones own laptop -)

Have you taken language and cross-cultural training courses to prepare for your assignment? If so, how have they helped you on the job?

No, I just came and the learning stated. I can communicate well with local people.

If you were transferred abroad by your employer, were you guaranteed a job upon repatriation? What type of mentoring programs does your employer offer?

Nothing like that. I just came to see if I could live here.

What advice would you offer others about finding jobs and working abroad?

Just look and do it if that's what one wants. There are hundreds of websites providing information about jobs.
