Expat Advice: Working in La Paz, Bolivia

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

La Paz

What are the main industries in this city? What types of career opportunities commonly exist? How do most people find new jobs?

In La Paz there is very little scope for cerrer opportunity. However, Bolivia as a whole now offers excellent opportunities in Gas/Petroleum related positions.

What type of work do you do and how did you find your job?

Independant consultant and advisor on security and related issues in South America. I am an ex-South Africa who moved here after self imposed exile and finding the local job market extremely tough. The language barrier aside, there are several cultural issues and attitudes which are hard to overcome at first. Making influential friends has been the single most deciding factor in becoming effective in this part of the world.
