An Expat Talks about What is Was Like Having a Baby in Zurich, Switzerland

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Zurich

How recently did you give birth in the country that you are reporting on?

Describe your experience giving birth there. What type of facility did you go to? What (if any) type of pain management did you use? How long did you stay in the hospital? Was it a positive experience? Etc...

Our daughter was born at a birthing center associated with a very reputable hospital in Zurich. I had midwives with me the entire time which were wonderful. Unfortunately due to complications, I ended up needing an emergency c-section which was not at all what I was expecting. As a result of the surgery I stayed in the hospital for 7 days although my insurance would have covered 10 days. Normal births have 5 days in the hospital. Overall it was a wonderful experience.

How did you choose your doctor, midwife or other type of medical professional?

By interviews and recommendations.

If you were to have another child in this country, would you do anything differently in terms of preparation and/or the delivery?

Nothing would be different - other than hopefully having a natural birth.

If a friend of yours living in the same country were expecting a baby, what advice would you give her?

If my friend was native English speaker like me I would tell her not to worry about the language barrier. Most of the doctors, nurses, midwives, etc... speak English and in the cases that they don't speak English you quickly realize that you can still communicate through other means. The best advice is to try to relax and to just enjoy it!
