An Expat Talks about What is Was Like Having a Baby in Guatemala City, Guatemala

Submitted by mishe

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Guatemala City

How recently did you give birth in the country that you are reporting on?

22 days

Describe your experience giving birth there. What type of facility did you go to? What (if any) type of pain management did you use? How long did you stay in the hospital? Was it a positive experience? Etc...

I went to the Centro De Parto Natural for the natural birth I always wanted. I had no pain management even though the labor was long. (31 Hours) My midwife was AMAZING. I highly recommend her. She monitored the baby and me regularly and knew just what to do when things slowed down. If it weren't for her, I most likely would have had to have a C-section. How did you choose your doctor, midwife or other type of medical professional?

We visited multiple hospitals and a clinic in Guatemala City as well as Quetzaltenango. There were so many restrictions, rules and such a push for C-sections that I knew it wasn't for me (except in an emergency.)

Through friends and fellow missionaries, I found out about Hannah Friewald and the Centro De Parto Natural. I wrote about the midwife option in Guatemala at http://drypixel.com/1088/midwife-natural-birth-guatemala/ Cost for the natural birth was a US$1710 for the full package and it was worth every penny!

If you were to have another child in this country, would you do anything differently in terms of preparation and/or the delivery?

I'd go right back to Hannah.

If a friend of yours living in the same country were expecting a baby, what advice would you give her?

Go to Hannah Friewald at the Centro De Parto Natural!
