An Expat Talks about Living in Medellin, Colombia
What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?
Medellin
Describe how you "dreamed" expat life would be before you moved overseas. Please provide as much detail as possible.
In 1989 i was hired to work in Germany and wound up spending the next twenty-four years living and working in Germany and Japan. There is a set of skills one needs to develop that include patience, humor and fortitude in my opinion. Coming in with that expectation helped me a lot and the "laugh or cry" principal helped A LOT. In a very short time, i learned that all nations, countries, cities excell at different things and many have cities that live very well, countries that live well. My dream was to see how the rest of the world lived...i have fulfilled that dream. I live in retirement in Medellin, Colombia. It is a very fine city whose government has learned to and does just about everything very well. In many ways, this is my dream city because of governance, imagination, developing resources, educational opportunities, natural resources and wonderful people. Without wonderful people, this city would be nice, but not nearly so wonderful.
How has your expat experience met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad?
By and largely, i find living abroad to be very interesting and i love Medellin. I knew i just had to learn how to do "this living here" thing, the banking, the health care, the insurance, the ins and outs of every day living. You cannot do this without investing of yourself.

How has your expat experience NOT met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad?
I had to learn about the differences in my own countrymen, we all don't see eye to eye, we all don't do things the same way, we don't always stick together. However, we all share the common denominator that put us here, the abilities to do this sort of thing and a genuine likeability of "we" kind of folks.
