Summary: If you're a newcomer in Taiwan and enrolling your children in school in Taiwan, here's how:

Enrolling your child in a public school in Taiwan can be a complex process, especially for expats who are unfamiliar with the local education system and language. It requires careful preparation and a good understanding of the necessary paperwork and procedures. This includes obtaining the necessary documents such as your child's birth certificate, passport, and Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), as well as understanding the local school districting system. However, with the right guidance and resources, the process can be made much smoother and less daunting.

  1. Obtain the necessary documents: Before you can enroll your child in a public school in Taiwan, you will need to have several documents ready. These include your child's birth certificate, passport, and Alien Resident Certificate (ARC). You may also need to provide proof of your residence in Taiwan.
  2. Understand the school districting system: In Taiwan, public schools are districted based on your residential address. This means that your child will typically attend the school that is assigned to your residential district. Therefore, it's important to understand the districting system and find out which school your child is eligible to attend.
  3. Visit the local education bureau: Once you have all the necessary documents and have identified the appropriate school, you should visit the local education bureau. They can provide you with the necessary application forms and guide you through the enrollment process.
  4. Submit the application forms: Fill out the application forms provided by the local education bureau. These forms will require information about your child, including their name, age, and previous education history. You will also need to provide copies of the necessary documents.
  5. Wait for confirmation: After submitting the application forms, you will need to wait for confirmation from the school. This can take several weeks, so it's important to start the enrollment process well in advance of the school year.
  6. Attend the orientation: Once your child's enrollment has been confirmed, you will be invited to attend an orientation. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the school, meet the teachers, and get your child familiarized with their new environment.
  7. Prepare for the first day of school: Make sure your child has all the necessary supplies for their first day of school. This may include textbooks, stationery, and a school uniform. It's also a good idea to talk to your child about what to expect and help them prepare emotionally for their new school.
