Obtaining a residency visa in Peru is not always easy, but our Guide to Residency in Peru gives newcomers an overview of the steps involved and advice from others who have already navigated the process.

  • Gather the necessary documents for residency status in Peru. These include:
    • Valid passport
    • Proof of address in Peru
    • Proof of financial solvency
    • Proof of health insurance
    • Criminal background check
  • Visit the nearest Peruvian consulate in your home country to apply for a visa. You will need to provide the documents listed above, as well as a completed visa application form.
  • Once you have obtained your visa, travel to Peru and register with the local immigration office. You will need to provide the documents listed above, as well as a completed residency application form.
  • Apply for a Tax Number from the Peruvian Tax Authority.
    • Visit the nearest Tax Authority office with your passport and proof of address in Peru.
    • Complete the application form and submit it along with the required documents.
    • Once your application has been approved, you will be issued a Tax Number.
  • Visit the local immigration office with your passport, proof of address in Peru, proof of financial solvency, proof of health insurance, criminal background check, and Tax Number. You will need to complete a residency application form.
  • Once your application has been approved, you will be issued a residency card, which will allow you to live and work in Peru.

What tips do expats have about residency and visas in Peru?

"Fairly easy you need a pension or SSI of $1,000.00 a month for your self and $500.00 more for each dependent," said one expat living in Lima.

"If you plan to stay in Peru for an extended period of time, you will need to obtain a residency visa. Depending on the length of your stay, you may need to apply for a temporary or permanent residency visa. You will need to provide proof of your identity, such as a valid passport, and other documents, such as proof of financial stability, to apply for a residency visa. Additionally, you may need to provide proof of health insurance and a criminal background check," wrote a member in Peru.

In order to obtain residency in Peru, foreign nationals must submit an application form, a valid passport, a passport-sized photograph, and the applicable fee. They must also provide proof of sufficient financial resources, a criminal background check, and a medical certificate. Depending on the type of residency, additional documents may be required. Once the application is approved, the foreign national will receive a residency card, which must be renewed every two years," commented one member living in Peru.
