I have countless weeks in Guayaquil on and off due to medical issues. As far as I am concerned, the ONLY area that I think is halfway safe, is an area called San Bornadon. (Hope I am spelling it right). Most of my friends that are Ecuadorian live there. It offers all the shopping and night life and it safer than most other areas. However, I know nothing about rentals. Another area, is called Urdesa. Not quite as safe but better than most areas. Are you thinking of making Guayaquil home? If so, I stronger encourage you to think twice and then three times about it.

Thank you Raregem, sorry to hear about your medical issues, so why would you say to stronger encourage me to think about moving to Guayaquil or do you mean Ecuador?

The area referenced is Samborondon. Urdesa, and Kennedy Norte are other desirable areas. There are more. Guayaquil is a big city in excess of 3 million people. Crime is an issue in most urban centers of that size. If such urbanization does not fit your lifestyle, please look elsewhere. Otherwise, Guayaquil is a wonderful city to live in, with many opportunities and social/cultural activities to engage the mind, heart and soul.

Ceibos has some very nice places to live, as do many of the new communities in the Via la Costa area. Lomas de Urdesa has some really nice apartments with beautiful views of the city. I love some of the smaller neighborhoods where you can walk to get anything you need, from hardware, to copies, to a pizza. Guayacanes is nice and fairly quiet. If you like the city, some of the areas near the universities are also nice. I also like Paraiso, which is near the universities as well. Samborandon is great if you have the budget, but there are some great neighborhoods that are more economical as well.

We lived in Playas for 6 months. We rented two different houses. The first one was nice , in a quiet area just minutes from downtown area in Playas for $300 a month. The second one was confortable and nice as well, on Via Data one block from the beach for $200 a month.
Let me tell you that most house owners would rather have the house sitting on the market than having a tenant for just a few weeks.
Our biggest problem finding a place to rent was that you have to have a car or something since that you won't find a newspaper or flyer with local rentals; you just have to drive and drive around looking for signs on the houses.
If you are planning on visiting Playas for one week or weekends from Guayaquil, I'll recomend to you that a hostel by the beach will do it. The nicest place to stay in Playas is La Posada del Sueco, ( search for the website laposadadelsueco.com) owed by a swedish guy, very cool and the place is beautiful, clean and safe, you can walk to the centro along the beach or get a taxi for $1, the big plus with the place is that they have a taxi driver named Cesar, super reliable, we ended up using this guy for several errands including picking people up from the airport.
Please bear in mind that beaches are not as clean as we are used to here in the states , but other than that people is friendly and they try to tell you about all the places nearby to visit.
Have fun in Ecuador!

Try airbnb.com i used it on my trip (i saw several very nice places in Playas). Makes staying there very economical & plus, you usually can get help from the people that you are staying with. good luck

When I stay in Guayaquil - I use the Muralli Hostel. They have short and long term rates and the people who work there there are absolutely great. It is clean, safe and a friendly atmosphere. Not expensive but very adequate.
