Hello,
In USA, when you are on Medicare, you 'also need' Supplemental Insurance to cover the 20% that Medicare does not pay.
Is It The Same in Ireland? Please Clarify.
If you know of webpages for info, please list the Web Addresses.
Thank you.

I think it depends on your circumstances. Try hse.ie.

Ireland has a different system than the US -with both public and private hospitals. There are only 4 or 5 health insurers and many different plans. Medical cards and doctor visit cards are means tested but you have to be here for a minimum of 12 months g(Google Habitual Residency Condition) and may need to have worked here, so doubt you'd qualify. Am not sure we can answer your question as your Medicare won't cover you here and depending on your residency/citizenship status you could be paying out of pocket as non-EU citizen. As farad I know you'd need to look into private health insurance.

Our medical insurance here in the States currently is based on which state we have residency in. Does anybody know if we can use these state based exchanges if we're in Ireland for less than a year?

My guess is that it's unlikely but best to check with the provider; if they say can be sure to get it in writing.

Google the term Citizen Information Ireland and you will find a site with answers to most questions. No US coverage applies. Private insurance covers accidents and some illnesses, there is a waiting period. Preexisting conditions are subject to another waiting period based on age. Worst case, 60 yr old with type 2 diabetes has a 10 yr wait for coverage.
