When we move to Italy we will already have obtained our (the Royal OUR) citizenship and passports, we have been looking at property and, hopefully, will have all of our ducks in the proverbial row. The one sticking point is that I am on SSDI and have been for several years, are there any tips for how to have that designation continue once we have relocated? Thanks!

Don't know that SSDI is specific to physically residing in the US. Ask the social security people. Assuming it is continuing, they will deposit it into an Italian bank if you wish.

I am on SSDI & I spoke with SS & Italy is one of the countries you still can receive you US SSDI. Most everyone gets their SSDI direct deposit. The SS did tell me to let them know when I move so if they need to send any piece of mail they can forward it to me. You can always change your bank if you need to like a Italian bank but you need to let SS know about it so your direct dep can go into new account. You can get a mail forward company in US depends what company you choose they will scan all your mail so if SS or anyone else does send you something in the mail you can look at it. Hope this helps..

hello there, just let your auto diposit stay going to your US bank account don't do any changes, then use your ATM card anywhere in the world to get cash.

I second this suggestion. It gives one the ability to check the EU/USD exchange rates and move money when it is best for you. And one can always wire larger sums, if necessary. My Italian wife has an Italian acct with a few euros in it for 'emergencies', just in case, but I don't have one and haven't ever had an acct here. I do exactly what Ferrari500 suggests.
Also, get a US credit card and set up online review and payments, then use your card here and pay it online in a few minutes. Very easy. Choose a card that doesn't ding you on the exchange rates; I use USAA and they are great.
I have little confidence in the US fiat-money system, but have less confidence in Italian banks. Cheers, John.

Hi Ferrari500.
What is the max dollars you can take daily from the atm? Does italy require you to report monies coming on from usa from the atm receipts (keep the receipts) .
Thank you.

Hi thefountain, Adding my two cents: I think Italy limits ANY cash transaction to EU 2000, but your ATM withdrawal amount will depend more upon your agreement with your bank. You can agree upon a daily limit, probably depending upon your prior financial actions with said bank.
Italy taxes ones income; ATM withdrawals are not "income", merely withdrawals of income already yours.
I know nothing about taxation of SSDI benefits or how they are affected.
No receipts; everything should be done online if you move here, including any mail from your bank. Just change your settings so they post them online instead of sending out paper. You can always pull them up online if necessary.
Cheers, John.

Make sure your bank does not charge atm and foreign transaction fees and reimburses you for other bank atm charges.
