I'm moving to Kuwait next month & was hoping someone could pass on some info/websites for expat social clubs, handy hints etc. This move has been extremely sudden so I haven't had much time to research or prepare! Thanks in advance for your help & time! :)
Being a Pom I have no idea about Aussie social clubs BUT I can pass on info. Get passport photos done, lots of 'em. Everything that you apply for here requires two piccies. Two for the Civil ID, Two for your Driving License, etcect, and they have to have a blue background! Have 10 - 20kd changed up before you arrive and handy to pay the Airport porters and taxis. The porters are only supposed to be paid 500fils, (Half a kd), but they will try and get more out of you and they do have a habit of pouncing on you while your loading your car, load a bag and expect payment. Expect to see blatent racism which is Kuwait at its worst, prepare to be amazed and terrified on the roads, learn the word Insha'allah, (Pronounced Insharla, means "Gods Will"). You will hear it on a daily basis and WILL drive you nuts! The residents guide is good but please remember its two years out of date and some things have changed. Saying that, the two major things to do here are Shopping and eating, both of which can be done in abundance
On the whole I like Kuwait. Yes it can be infuriating especially when dealing with the goverment and there are times I have thought "Wha the hell am I doing here" but on the whole I am actually enjoying it.
Oh and your embassy is in the Dar Al-Awadi Building in Kuwait City, floor 12.
I think the Q8 experience depends very much as to whether you have a family or are single, are female or male.
For site searching use Q8 as well as Kuwait. http://www.fas.org/irp/agency/army/arabculture.pdf http://www.abcq8.com/ http://www.q8local.com http://www.q8books.com/Q8B/eQ8home.asp
I'm a single male that's here temporarily so I use the busses to work everyday and then only use the taxi's to get about to some of the markets etc. The busses are very cheap and are pretty safe - 200 Fills will get you around to most places.
The area you stay in will dictate where you do most of your shopping - Salmiya has City Centre and Sultan Centre and you can find most things there that you get in the west so don't haul over stacks of toiletries etc.
Once here you can get a mobile card and if you have a laptop - arrange internet connectivity to skype back home - if you don't have a laptop you can get them out here at pretty good prices.
Once you get a routine going, things kinda fall into place: Join a gym or health club and along the marina mall drive there is a very scenic jogging route. Sure the weather in summer is pretty hot but it's dropped radically the past few weeks and walking about at midday is a breeze compared to 2 months back.
As to clothes - I travel light and brought suiites, but then added to my wardrobe from the very large Firday Market (souk dzouma) - so if you're into that kind of thing, you can everything from jeans and tracksuits through to Oakley t-shirts and leather jackets - just a matter of hunting around there. You also get furniture and rugs out there. The air here is hectic on the hair - mega condioner! The heels take a pounding from the dryness. You will get a slight dose of flu on arrival - dust and airconditioners etc. The tv channel subscription has the regular sports, Discovery and movie channels. Plugs are different - you can get coverters out here. Chemists are pretty much the same as anywhere else - just no strong painkillers and be carefull what medication you bring in - check first! Taxi's from the airport are standard - KWD5 - but around Q8 you should pay between 1,5 or 2 - and ask for a price before you get in - I see many starting to use the meters now - but most don't - they operate on a basis of renting the cab for KWD7 a day so have to get enough fares to make up their own wages.
I'm pretty much on foot and alone most of the time and have never had any major hassles - the only time you get some real irritable beaviour is when the youth hit the streets in their cars or their dad's cars at night to try and impress everyone. There appears to be a dating thing to driving around wher ethey try to hook up with the opposite sex by shouting across at each other - so take the wild evening driving as a mating ritual lol.
