Philhealth is go value but only offeres a discount. Most medical insurence don't cover beyond 60 and get very expensive. It is common to just keep an emergency fund in your home country bank account.

Blue Cross Philippines, not associated with BC USA, seems a good one. However, rates rise sharply after 65 and do not cover previously existing conditions. They have both dollar and peso plans at several levels of coverage.
The 'previous condition' caveat leaves most of us retirees out in the cold because it refers to conditions which existed before the policy is signed WHETHER OR NOT THEY WERE KNOWN. That exemption covers a lot of territory. Think cardiac conditions and cancer.

I saw some videos as to how a private hospital will not allow you to leave until the bill is paid. They may not accept credit cards or have an ATM on site. This seems like it could be a real problem for a newly arrived expat without any close friends even if he has the money on his bank account. Any knowledge of this?

Freedom16, it's true the hospital will hold you ransom until pay in full. Sometimes they might cut a deal but don't count on it. In addition for every day you can't pay they will continue to charge you for your bed.
It's worse in other nations though, my brother-in-law in Honduras was shot through a lung during a holdup and he was denied care or even a bandaid because he didn't have the money up front for the surgery that would have saved his life. They allowed him to die on the steps in front of the hospital. That was the 2nd hospital he went to. The first hospital was on strike.

Its scary. Putting that aside where is the logic in not taking a credit card or not having an ATM on site or not escorting the patient to an outside ATM after treatment. I understand that is the case is some of the hospitals. Can that really be,

Well if your taken to hospital here you have to have someone with yo to look after you cos the doctors and nurses just do the medication they won't take you to toilet or help you to shower etc so when you leave they can go to ATM and withdraw the money. So might not be the big problem you think it is.

Not a problem unless you don't have anyone. From what I have read it may be hard to hire someone trustworthy even if you can afford it.

Regarding carers while you are in hospital it shouldn't be a problem if you are in a private hospital, and from my brief experience of a government hospital you would want to go private.

I think Woldnomads assumes you have other coverage from your home country. If you put Philiipines in both travel and permanent residence it won't give you a quote. I would give them a call or you might be on the losing side. I know if I had paid health insurance from the US, it would cover most emergency situations while in the Phillipines. I just won't pay $450 a month for the medical services here. If you are concerned stash away some funds and have them readily available or get yourself a good credit card, BOA Travel is a great one because converts to foreign currency for free and 1 . 5% rewards.. CapitalOne has same. And line up a GOOD hospital that will also take the CrCd.
