Has anyone been affected in anyway by the Martial Law in Mindanao, from a Personal Point of view in the Davao area things seem to be pretty much as normal as long as you have ID on you such as your ACR Card or Passport or other varifiable ID

The 9:00 pm curfew is the only drawback that I can see.

Some want martial law lifted but I think that will give terrorists an advantage. Right now if intel says such and such a person is connected they can be arrested, but without martial law warrents have to be issued and that takes time and gives time to the offender to run. Look how much money and drugs they have siezed in Marawi if they didn't have martial law that would have disappeared. I am glad it doesn't really affect law abiding people, it's probably keeping it safer. Now Turkish terrorists have entered Philippines, that is not good news.

Good point draks. If it helps with catching terrorists and doesn't affect us law abiding people I'm all for it.

Draks - I agree . Middle easterners radicals entering into the PI , is TROUBLE. DU30 has to deal with this right away. Martial law allows him to do this , right away .... so I agree . law abiding folks should never be the intent of Martial law .

Regarding Martial law I have noticed the protesters don't even live in Mindanao but mainly in Manila, personally I feel a lot safer even though I've been asked for my ID a couple of times as long as you abide by the rules no problem, one thing which is being pushed lately is jay walking a couple of expats have been stopped lately and fined and have to attend a seminar in the city

It’s a 10 pm curfew for minors and midnight for adults.

Just did about 6 weeks in N. Mindanao, near Ozamiz City. Nice and peaceful, but, with lots more visible troops than before, plus some police checkpoints. Not any different than the usual visit in terms of how easy it was to get around.

I remember martial law under Marcos, he used it to suspend democracy and stay in power, it's a very slippery slope. I also remember a curfew in my neighborhood in the 70's, we used to ride around on our banana seat bikes until the police (pigs back in the day) spotted us and gave chase, I think they found it amusing as I'm sure they could have caught us if they really wanted, I certainly wouldn't try it now days.

I came to the Philippines to visit my brothers in Medical School in 1978. Martial Law under Marcos you were afraid to say anything in public whether it was in a taxi cab or to anyone on the street. When my eldest brother first came to the Philippines in the early 1970's before Martial Law he said it was like the wild west. You were afraid to go out after sundown and while sleeping you frequently heard gunshots. This was all in Metro Manila.

ACEpoolplayer. Understand concerns in past but what do you think will be near and long range future? My plan to move is fixed but as to where is still in question. Danger all over world now. I have traveled to many remote world locations and danger everywhere. If you really want to live in fear just travel to the Congo or Afghanistan. Bounced off my rack as explosions hit danger close. Makes chairity efforts to dig water wells a real HOOT. Bebo

Bebo, You really have to decide what your priorities are. If it's to be near your friends, I'd certainly understand that. You can live in or near Angeles without getting involved with the bar scene. Give us a list of what your priorities are and I'm sure you'll have many people giving your suggestions as to where to live. As a single senior person you can live anywhere in the Philippines for $1500-$1800 a month as long as it's not in the heart of Manila or Cebu.

ACEpoolplayer After receiving info from several good people on this forum I have come to realize that defining where I should look depends on exactly what I am looking for in many categories. Most of which can only be answered after traveling around the country and determining for myself from my own experience not by referral or speculation. I will be on a flight to Manila as soon as I can. From there several other locations suggested by some on here. I believe that is the only way for me. If I had not found this forum I would have made so many mistakes. I thank you all for the help. What an adventure this will be. Your friend Bebo Hawks

bebo.....before you travel make a copy of your passport and drivers license and put it in a safe place. This way should either of those get lost OR STOLEN.....you have proof of identity.

Bebo, after visiting the Philippines 12 times in just 4 years, I decided to settle in Puerto Princesa - Palawan. I had set several criteria for the choice, like: airport nearby with frequent flights, good hospitals, a mall nearby, friendly population, and honestly, Puerto Princesa met almost of them. No surprise it was once named the most beautiful island in the world. But so many others here might compete.... Take your time visiting, maybe asking information here. From my part, I can give you info in PM. And even have a buko with you when you come. ;-) PS: avoid Manila and Cebu hells by all ways.

Puerto Princesa is now a target location. Cost of available housing is a big consideration. Difficult to find current and accurate pricing on rental properties. The popularity of your location can put my budget. Over the top. Very much appreciate your help. Big move for me. I assume that a Buko is a meeting? Getting old and local transportation is important. Still Mobil but the years add up now. Will be 70 at time of move. Thanks for your help. Your friend Bebo
