IS living overseas a cyclic thing ? How long did you last before you headed back home ?

When i first went to Brasil in 2001, the country was booming and things were quiet. Many gringoes were arriving including me to stay a while.
Then comes the crash of the US dollar in 2007, exchange rate goes to 1.5 to 1. prices in reais rise sharply. No longer is it 'CHEAP' to live in Brasil.
I've read accounts of people giving it up and leaving ... from 1 year to 8 like me.
Beyond the change in the exchange rate, throw in the mix a different politican environment, economy, oil field crash, etc.

There seems to be what I call a 'BURN OUT RATE' for living overseas.

Have you experienced it and how long did you last where you went ?
WHY did you head back home ?

The other funny thing is that once back, there is always the idea in the back of your mind to return or to look for another place to go next time.

I guess some of us are just adventure junkies. I've been to 45 countries and it seems I get bored staying in one place past 6 months.
Seems there is something like a 7 year cycle where life and living conditions change radically - in any country.
Isn't that what us Americans are going through now ?

Is there ANYONE who has stayed put where you immigrated to for over 15 years ? Is there a close to perfect place to retire to ?
