I couldn't agree more. I've been living here for eight years now because for me the South of Brazil is simply too boring. Sewage runs on waterways, public transportation is catastrophic, and you don't leave home after 8 p.m. let alone at 10.

I am not been to Recife have been living in Imperatriz. It’s inland about 6 hour drive to Sao Luiz. It has a nice river runing through the town. People are our walking at night along the river and on the streets. I been here for 4 years no problem with robbers. There are some here I know some of the local police. I asked them about car jacking they told me the only type of thief was motorcycle.. The negative is always hot or rain very little weather change. Rent is cheap they have a few good restaurants. The people are friendly and helpful. I also have traveled to Salavador spend a month there. Stayed near the beach next to the lighthouse. Was able to walk at night but warned to stay on the street next to the beach and there were police there. Like the city good restaurant and grocery store well stocked. I rented a one bedroom apartment was through AirBnB about 23 Dollars a night. Right next to beach. I just was in Florianopolis visiting my Step Daughter. I was there for Christmas and New Years went to the Island to watch Fireworks. It seem very safe I pulled 20,000 Reals from a ATM at one of the grocery store was worried. Took a taxi direct to the bank to pay a car off. Walked both at night and daytime no problems. The negative is the traffic. If you don’t live near the lake or beach plan at least a hour or two to get there. The beach on weekend crowds of people. There are many beautiful places to explore in Florianopolis but the crowds are not my liking. Prefer smaller town hope this helps

Must be nice to be able to pull R$20,000 out of an ATM in Brazil. Where I live gangs continue to invade the banks at night and blowing up the ATMs. As a result Bradesco and Banco do Brazil have pulled their ATM machines out of Pipa and Tibau and the cap for ATM withdrawals has always been between R$500 to R$1,000 per day no matter what your bank card had set for a max. We now have 24 hours bank that will allow me to make several ATM withdrawals in a single day but they limit each withdrawal to R$1,000 and charge you R$24.00 or about $7.00 USD. So I can do 34 hits on the ATM for R$3,000.00 but I pay amost R$75.00 to do so!

I tried to edit but it would not allow it. Where I said "34 hits on the ATM" should read "3 hits on the ATM"

I was just in Florianopolis my Daughter is going to school there and working. I have a suggestion to save you bus rides. Get a account with Charles Schwab checking. We used the ATM in Florianopolis and they paid all the fees back at the end of each month. The ATM card is alway close to the dollar to Real value of the day. I found a Italian Restaurant there it close to Mcdonalds on the street with the center divider near the Bank of Brazil. Recommend it all you can eat for 30 Reals great food. Sorry don know the street names. There a car dealer on the corner.
