My mother in-law has dual US-Chilean citizenship, and is considering moving back to Chile to be near family after 50+ years in the States. I am looking for some official resources to help guide her on things she needs to know. Things such as banking (she collects US Social Security & has a University pension), bringing a car over, etc. Anything, really, to get her started.
Again, we're looking for official resources.
Thanks!

I left in 1975 and returned to Chile in 2012, my parents and great aunt last year. There is an entire Official Manual online for returning Chileans, here is a link to the file on my google drive: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7jcifIEDRhrNXd6bzdhS3hxc1E
In short, Bank account Cuenta RUT at Banco Estado to start, then proving income to other banks to get a "better" account, but that would have a cost. Importing a car makes no sense unless it is a high-value one but within the exemption. Check Chileautos.cl to compare, import cost (of a FCL) could be around 1.1-1.5 Million pesos plus shipping costs. best Walter

With a University pension she probably has it with TIAA, formerly TIAA-CREF that handles IRA's and pension plans for educators and medical staff. They have an excellent free system for forwarding social security, IRA and pension payments on a monthly basis to Chile.

Wow! Thank you both for the information you've shared! I'm in the process of translating & saving the "MANUAL OF RETURNING TO Chileans abroad" .pdf document, and will have look at it later this afternoon. Re: University pension--I don't know if it's TIAA (TIAA-CREF). I'll have to find out, but that definitely sounds promising! Do you happen to have a like to the details? Does anyone have any other resources or tips for shipping household goods over to Chile?

@Watler: 1) So, it costs ~$1700 USD + the cost of shipping to import a car to Chile? (Ouch!) 2) What's an FCL? 3) Also, is "Cuenta RUT" a type of bank account at a Chilean bank called "Banco Estado"? (savings, checking?) Why this account first, then a 'better' account. And what is the 'cost' you are referring to? I found the link below, but perhaps you wouldn't mind explaining the strategy behind your suggestion? Thank you. http://www.bancoestado.cl/imagenes/_personas/productos/cuentas/cuenta-rut-home.asp

Is there an English version of this document available? (Google is doing a very messy job of translating the .pdf.) "MANUAL OF RETURNING TO Chileans abroad" http://www.chilesomostodos.gov.cl/wp/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Manual-del-Regreso_-Segunda-Edicion.pdf

All cases are different but in my case I sold my car here and am buying a similar one there for even money and the one there is a year younger. The RUT is a tax identifying number that is used for everything, It is similar to a drivers license in the US and you go to the local tax office and ask for it. It is mostly electronic now and people carry it on their smartphones, they don't print them out anymore. Opening a bank account is a lengthy process for which you need a RUT and it is best to find someone in Chile that has connections with a Bank that can recommend you, I suggest the BCI that is more in touch with foreign transactions.
