Accident

Today I was on a side street stopped at a stop light behind several other cars. There was a guy who was clearly disabled stumbling along the row of stopped cars with his hand out. As he approached my car a truck carrying Renault cars came up slowly behind him. The Renault dealer is right there. The street is two lane but narrow and vehicles rarely enter from that direction so the guy probably didn’t expect the truck coming up behind him. When he reached me I had my hand out with a moned a de mil to give him but before I could put it in his hand the truck moved past him and part of the trailer or something hit him and knocked him down. When I tried to open the door to help him I realized he was on the ground against my door so I couldn’t open it. At that moment the two guys from the truck arrived and helped him to his feet. He didn’t seem to be hurt but I don’t know. The light changed and as he was in their hands and there were cars behind me I moved forward. In retrospect maybe I should have pulled over and offered myself as witness. Don’t know. I come down this side street before the light frequently and he has been there for a couple of weeks. I always give him a moneda de mil. Looking at him today as the truckers held him up I’m sure he is retarded and suffers other disabilities. I hope he is alright. What gnaws at me now is that it is pretty obvious that someone drops him off there to beg doubtless a family member and takes the money from him when they pick him up. In Colombia even the retarded and infirm have to earn their keep.
