Prescription Costs

So based on what I've read from you folks, prescriptions can be paid by SURA EPS. Is that right? Of course, in the US mine are covered by Medicare. So does SURA EPS cover prescriptions for expats too?

The short answer is yes, EPS pays for prescriptions. with a minuscule copay.

That said and without going into details, it is a heckuvalot more bureaucratic than getting a prescription filled with Medicare in the US.

Low cost prescriptions are renewed automatically and can be subscribed by a general physician.
High cost prescriptions (mine costs close to 200.000 monthly) can only be prescribed by a specialist and need a six month renewal by a specialist and it is up to the patient to get an appointment with his specialist to secure the timely renewal. Keep in mind, those appointments can be drawn out over weeks and months, depending on your actual state of health I suppose.
My co-pay is 3500 pesos for the high cost and the same amount for all four general prescriptions. Yours may be higher depending on your income they have on file. High cost medication outlets have a separate location (Farmacia de Alto Costo) than the low cost Pharmacies.

Viking: how do you get the costs covered? When you're at the pharmacy? Or do you submit receipts? For what I pay monthly with Colsanitas (prepagada) I'd love to know how it's done since my assessora won't communicate with me.

Pascoa, your medications need to be in the system of Colsanitas by getting prescriptions from your physicians.
Colsanitas works only with two pharmacies they have a contract with, the regular and the high cost pharmacy I imagine. But if you live in a place with only one Pharmacy wide and far it's more complicated
Therefore your medication should be in the Pharmacies system and paid for by Colsanitas.
This is how just about any EPS in Colombia operates.
Maybe you should visit your Colsanitas office and verify this information.
Getting information on the phone here is tough as they talk a mile a minute and hang up if you can't follow them.
Hope I understood your question correctly.

SURA EPS cover prescriptions when they are required by your SURA doctor. you pay your deductible, about $3,500 pesos a month, (when you have prescriptions or treatments for several months.
