Former President of Ecuador Correa(who is under indictment for corruption & lives in Belgium) has his hand-picked candidate who is leading in their polls. I have a feeling he will win, as when Correa was Presidente oil was above $100 USD per barrel & new airports/hydroelectric dams/port facilities were constructed & the voters remember the good works built during his tenure in office.....one great example is the new Quito Int'l airport=state of the art in every aspect. I recall there were 19 different stations at migracion and I was processed rapidly and 2 other flights had arrived within 15 mins of mine. Sunday is the day to vote in Ecuador. Buena Suerte !

In Ecuador, ex-banker Guillermo Lasso won the Presidential election with 52.5% & 96% of the votes counted.. For the loser, socialist-economist Andres Arauz...well I believe that donation to FARC was not well received by the voters. Plus a socialist candidate was defeated...Gracias a Dios. Buena Suerte !

I saw that last night but wasn’t sure of the percent of votes counted.
There might still be some hope for Colombia after all.

This might be off topic, forgive me, but it's intent is just for entertainment. Years ago I was in a restaurant in downtown Quito with my Spanish teacher. On my last day at the school I decided to take her out for breakfast. We just sat down with coffees and the army basically barged in and swept the place, we were someone shocked of course and thought we were going to die, not knowing wtf was going on? They were simply checking the place out, then in came Rafeal Correa for breakfast. He looked around, actually waved and smiled at us and went and sat down. We finished, exited and saw what was a armada of armed vehicles and bullet proof limos. Memorable experience for a Canadian who grew up in a country where the Prime Minister once* waded into crowds and simply met the people.
*not any more here either.

And our Marxist rebel Gustavo Petro would have been overjoyed. He probably called Maduro and that jackass Raúl Castro in Cuba for support and encouragement to continue his fight to 'liberate' Colombia

Unfortunately I think any government in Latin America can be one scandal away from a regime change. I know Ecuador has had a few scandals with health ministers having to resign over vaccines getting administered to well connected people.
It’s a bit off topic but I heard that Maduro was trying to trade oil for vaccines. This was the only way he could pay for the vaccines. I also heard from my maid that covid is rampant in many parts but you won’t see much about it in the news. (Sorry for the hijack).

I did see where Andres Arauz was calling for unity in Ecuador and he said the right won and we need to all work together. I think this speaks a bit about his character even if I vehemently disagree with his political views.

Governments leaning to the right in Latin America like Colombia will fight a never ending battle to stay in power. But as long as there is extreme poverty, over-population of children (in lack of a better word) without a future, by today's First World standards which usually provides enough opportunities to land a job, there will be rebellion and dreams of Socialism. Taking from the well to do and distributing their assets among the poor is only a temporary fix and soon everybody is poor except some government officials. So what is the answer? First off, refrain from having children who won't have a future and may 'work the transit system' after grown up, to be more directly, becoming beggars. Stop having children with morons who can't even support themselves, never mind a family. Don't have children with lazy men who are moping around the house waiting for you to return from work and who didn't like school as a child. Don't be so damn proud for being a single mom or your never ending quest for having a child if you can barely support it or them and the child will never know his or her father, like the girls under my care, who strangely enough seem to be pretty nonchalant about their situation. They don't feel singled out, because most of their friends in school are in a similar situation. So now that the colombiana has her offspring she will dump the child in her mothers lap who usually lost her husband do to his infidelity years ago, and go to work to support her 'family Colombian style'. It's the godforsaken culture here that causes most of the poverty. The other is widespread corruption totally ingrained in some people. When will Colombia be a developed country if ever? Not in our lifetime. But with all it's faults for me it's still the best there is.

Vikingo...I wholeheartedly agree with you 400% concerning this forever cycle-of poverty. One statistic tells it all...84% of all children born in Colombia are born to a single mother. Buena Suerte !

Well Sky, I dont think all of the mothers in that 84% were single mother at the time of birth, but they usualy become one soon after

Vikingo
While much of what you write is due to aspects of Colombian culture about status of children part is also worldwide social trends and beliefs some consider progress.
Saw some statistics recently stating births to un married mothers in America ranged from 38 to 52% of all births with some exceptions such as Utah which was 19%. 1 in 4 children lived in a house without a father, and over 40% of households headed by a single mother were classified as poor.
However perhaps other issues in terms of how the economy is structured, and corruption, more significant how Colombia doesn't become a more advanced nation. As my daughter's 4th grade Colombian teacher told her students " if Colombians don't learn to be more honest and disciplined, and less corrupt, it will never become a first world country'"
But it is a great place to live for the most part, and seems to rank high on world happiness surveys.

@Skyman the donation was allegedly made by the ELN, not the FARC which no longer exists since the 2016 peace deal. The alleged donation was shown to be false and part of a smear campaign run by the CD and its allies in the media, notably La Semana.
