Moving with Dogs: Location Advice

Hi, I am new to this forum and have been travelling throughout CR and Nica for years and finally ready to take the plunge and move full-time. I am a single woman with a job in the states that I will continue in CR remotely. I'm looking at Uvita, Grecia, Atenas, and Dominical as potential homes (all areas that check every other need/desire and depending on which I am able to fibest live with the dogs) and wondering if anyone has advice or experience with dog-friendliness (especially finding rentals) in these areas. Or have experience with dog friendliness of these areas. Or know any good resources to start? They are BIG dogs - golden retriever and shepherd mix. I looked into vet care last fall when I was down in CR - talked to vets about preparation, etc. so it's more of the towns themselves.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Have you already checked with airlines on how your pups would travel, such as 'checked baggage' or would they be required to fly cargo??

I lived in CR for 2 years with my dog. I found the environment there different than ours. Where we consider our dog a part of the family, there it is a pet. If you keep a watch on your animals, everything will be fine. Naturally, the lower the altitude you live at, the more you will have to watch for problems such as tics, etc. Find a good vet and ask around. There are many. Food is also a small challenge as most that we have in the states are not there in CR. Again, a little research and you're good to go. Also, are you doing the paperwork yourself or going with a pet transportation agency? There are good ones and bad ones. I dealt with 2. the first was terrible, the second was marvelous. Expect a high cost to transport your babies. Any other specifics you want to ask, fire away. Good luck.

Also, the airlines will not take dogs in Cargo during N American summer months due to high temps. Please be aware of the diseases carried by feral homeless dogs (erlichea is rampant in CR) with ticks heavy in certain areas. Your golden may be intrigued by toads, snakes - some of which are poisoness/deadly. Most of the country is tolerant of dogs but please do NOT leave your dogs to run sans leash...because we have all known of horrific stories of poisoning/machete attacks by dog haters. Renting can be problematic with more than 1 smaller dog so hopefully you'll find ideal fenced property that will allow 2 before you venture forth. Best of luck. From one who lost both her dogs imported from USA within a year due to poor vet care and machete attack.

RebeCR, I can sympathize with you as we lost 3 dogs that were poisoned during multiple robberies a few years ago, in our neighborhood.

Someone also tried to poison our dog. If we had not taken him in when we did, he would have died shortly. It was confirmed to be rat poison. We ended up putting in security cameras, so at least if anyone does it again, we will know to......

We moved 17 cats and 4 dogs from Florida with World Pet Travel...eccentric but not too crazy! We paid extra to have them picked up at our house, they overnighted in Miami with outdoor time for the dogs and were then taken to SJO and delivered to new home near Dominical that day! Professional and thorough.
