Strike in San Jose

Dear Canadians,
You are receiving this email because you are registered with the Government of Canada's Registration of Canadians Abroad service. Please share the following important information with other Canadian nationals in your area.

Please note that a strike by Labour Unions is being planned in San Jose beginning Monday, September 10, 2018. Demonstrations are expected and may include roadblocks. Significant disruptions to traffic, public services including medical and transportation services are expected. You are encouraged to take precautionary measures in advance of the strike (fuel, water, prescription medication).

Please find below an update on expected activities and/or service disruptions next week.

• Possible interruption in ICE cell service. Private cellular services – Claro, Movistar, Tigo Movil – are not expected to be affected.
• Key demonstration locations: areas around the Legislative Assembly, President’s Palace; MEP; CCSS, 2nd Avenue and Central Avenue
• Roadblocks on routes 27, 32, 39, 1, 2 and 34 are possible
• The port of Limon and Moin are expected to be shutdown with roadblocks affecting the Caldera and Golfito exits
• Demonstrations are expected at or near UCR, TEC, UNA and UNED
• There will be a significant reduction in medical services available including emergency response.

Please note that there is an increased risk of conflict at strategic points as the President has issued an order to authorities to prevent any roadblocks affecting primary routes.

These areas should be avoided. In the event of an emergency, please call 911.

We will continue to monitor the situation and advise of any additional security concerns.

Canadians should remain vigilant at all times, avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings, follow the advice of local authorities and monitor local media. We recommend, if possible, that Canadians get in touch with their family members and emergency contacts in Canada to confirm their whereabouts and wellbeing, even if they have not been affected by this event.
